Jewish-American Tom, currently a sous chef at a trendy restaurant, eventually wants to own his own restaurant. Christian-Brit Violet’s immediate goal is to do post-doctorate academic work in psychology at UC-Berkeley. In addition to working toward their professional goals, they are planning their wedding for an undetermined date, the event which they envision to be perfect much like their marriage will be, to make up for the less than perfect proposal which did not quite come off according to Tom’s plan.

On the other hand, much to cranky Eliezer’s chagrin, the driven Professor Uriel seems to be showered with recognition, fame and all the things he ever longed for; a distressful topic and the reason for a subtle, yet bitter academic rivalry. Is that it then? A brief reference in a book for a life’s work?

Un Amour de Jeunesse is a delicate love story, tender and erotic, and drenched in the idealism and seriousness of its central character, Camille (Lola Créton), looking like a very young Penélope Cruz. It is released here under the English title Goodbye First Love, which I think is slightly wrong, pre-empting audience expectations and misreading the film’s ambiguity.
