Set in France during the mid-1970s, Vanessa, a former dancer, and her husband Roland, an American writer, travel the country together. They seem to be growing apart, but when they linger in one quiet, seaside town they begin to draw close to some of its more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/café-keeper and a hotel owner.
By The Sea follows American writer Roland (Brad Pitt) and his wife Vanessa (Angelina Jolie Pitt), who arrive in a tranquil and picturesque seaside resort in 1970s France, their marriage in apparent crisis. As they spend time with fellow travelers, including young newlyweds Lea (Mélanie Laurent) and François (Melvil Poupaud) and village locals Michel (Niels Arestrup) and Patrice (Richard Bohringer), the couple begins to come to terms with unresolved issues in their own lives.
By the Sea is inspired by European cinema and theater of the 1960s and ’70s. “This is a story about a relationship derailed by loss, the tenacity of love and the path to recovery and acceptance,” Jolie Pitt said in a statement. “It has been a privilege to explore these universal human experiences with such a generous and talented cast and crew.”
By the Sea is an American drama film directed and written by Angelina Jolie. The film stars Jolie and Brad Pitt. The film is scheduled to be released on November 13, 2015, by Universal Pictures.
