The Balconettes movie storyline. Conceived as a bloody, punk and jubilant comedy, The Balconettes follows three young women who, from their apartment in Marseille and in the heatwave, observe their neighbor, the object of their fantasy. They find themselves stuck in a terrifying and delusional affair with their only quest, their freedom.

The Balconettes (French: Les Femmes au balcon) is a 2024 French comedy horror film directed by, co-written by, and starring Noémie Merlant. The film, which co-stars Souheila Yacoub and Sanda Codreanu, follows three young women during a heatwave in the south of France. The film premiered in the Midnight Screenings section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on 19 May 2024, where it competed for the Queer Palm.

The Balconettes was selected to be screened out of competition in the Midnight Screenings section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it had its world premiere on May 19, 2024. The film was theatrically release the film in France on September 4, 2024. International sales was handled by mk2 Films.

About the Film

After having had the honors of a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021 with her first film, Mi Iubita, mon amour, Noémie Merlant shot her second feature film, The Balconettes, this summer. Initially scheduled for August, the start of filming was brought forward to July 10 so that the director could be available from September for the filming of the new adaptation of Emmanuelle by Audrey Diwan, in which she will play the title role.

The shooting of The Balconettes took place in Marseille for seven weeks. With a budget of €3.5 million, the film is produced by Pierre Guyard, for Nord-Ouest Films, and benefited from the support of the CNC, via the advance on receipts. Canal+ and France Télévisions are also partners, while Tandem was in charge of theatrical distribution. For its part, MK2 negotiated international sales.

Noémie Merlant wwas in the casting of her film, surrounded by Souheila Yacoub and Sanda Codreanu. The filmmaker, who co-wrote the screenplay with Céline Sciamma, reunites with her cinematographer and sound engineer who worked on Mi Iubita, mon amour, Evgenia Alexandrova and Armance Durix.
