From Embers tells the story of a woman who mourns the death of her husband and tries to raise her child alone. Lily is a mother trying to cope with the sudden loss of her husband Ron. While she mourns her death, she also takes care of their autistic son, Kevin. Having trouble getting her life back on track, Lily befriends their new alcoholic neighbor, Marty Baker, a music-loving painter who takes care of his 13-year-old teenage daughter.
