Bed & Breakfast movie storyline. When workaholic Sarah astonishes herself by quitting her job, she has no idea what to do next. She lets herself be talked into looking after her aunt’s Bed & Breakfast, though with considerable reluctance. Up until now, her life has consisted of working overtime, takeaway meals and Uber rides.
Among the chickens and vegetable gardens in a country village, whatever will this city girl do? When Sarah encounters not just one but two potential suitors, both the B&B and her heart are wide open to love. Forced to choose between the two men, who differ in just about every way, Sarah gradually discovers there are other choices she needs to make.
Bed $ Breakfast is a Dutch romantic comedy film directed by Ruud Schuurman and starring Sanne Langellar, Jelka van Houten, Liz Snoyink, Oscar Aerts, Mingus Dagelet, Denise Aznam, Margôt Ros, Liz Snoyink, Sabri Saad El-Hamus, Valentijn Benard and Jochen Otten. The screenplay was written by Anna Pauwels.
All about Bed & Breakfast
Bringing the search for true love to the national television via a Bed & Breakfast has been a golden opportunity. Millions of viewers enjoyed it immensely. What was therefore inevitable: such a Bed & Breakfast story (with or without love) in the Dutch cinema.
The film that can be seen from tomorrow is simply called Bed & Breakfast. You could say one of the many romantic comedies in our rom-com country. But yes, after all that B&B Vol Liefde violence on TV, Metro of course went to watch for the Film Review of the Week. If only because the always nice Sanne Langelaar plays the leading role.
Workaholic, bitch, fired
The aforementioned Sanne Langelaar is a complete workaholic in Bed & Breakfast Sarah. A bit of a smart-aleck bitch too, with her smartphone alarm going off at 6:30 am when she is still sleeping with her head on the desk in the office. Type of overtime, takeaway meals and Ubers, so to speak, and absolutely not a ‘people’s person’. Her colleague and friend (Denise Aznam) is concerned: “Aren’t you forgetting to eat?” she regularly asks. “And to live?”
When it turns out that Sarah cannot become a partner in the business, she resigns as a bolt from the blue. She asks the same concerned friend the first question that comes to her mind: “What do people who don’t work actually do?” Her aunt (Liz Snoyink), who wants to enjoy a holiday, comes up with an answer: temporarily run my Bed & Breakfast. That’s not for her, Sarah thinks. But she also knows: “My life is stupid.” Off to Groningen, chickens and a vegetable garden. “To innocent, pathetic people in the countryside,” said the bitchy workaholic of the past.
After many struggles, Sarah finally gets the hang of running a Bed & Breakfast. It turns out that working and living in such a village is not that bad. Especially when men suddenly cross her path, Klaas and Berend (of course, you think of names like that in Groningen). Klaas is a gentle and very attentive supermarket man, played by Mingus Dagelet. Berend (Oscar Aerts) the neighbor who always does odd jobs and makes noise and, according to his aunt, “a great import supporter.” Sarah initially thinks more of the title “dog cock”.
That’s all we can say about Bed & Breakfast before the real rom-com stuff starts. If you know that the makers were previously responsible for Zwaar Verliefd! and Everything Is As It Should Be, then fans of romantic comedy know that their genre is good. Tip for the fans of B&B Vol Liefde: optimistic Olof, who tried to woo Marian (a crowd favorite, Metro wrote earlier), has a tiny role.
Love or no love in Bed & Breakfast
Experience shows that some moviegoers really cannot cope with this swooning; the other part enjoys it. This Metro viewer may be right, although the reference to an earthquake is too bad to be true. You can always send Sanne Langelaar for a rom-com message, she never disappoints (fortunately she can do a lot more, as was evident for two seasons in the Swanenburg series). With Oscar Aerts it seemed that he was only in the ‘dorky losers’ bucket at casting agencies, but he is now surprising. It’s nice to see Mingus Dagelet again. And Jelka van Houten is wonderful as the blunt jerk Esther, the waitress at the local tavern.
But yes, does the latter perhaps have to do with (the lack of) love? And just like in B&B Vol Liefde, the question naturally arises: will it be Klaas, or will it be Berend? Or will the owner of the tent be left pitifully alone?
