Costa Brava, Lebanon movie storyline. The free-spirited Badri family have escaped the toxic pollution of Beirut by seeking refuge in the utopic mountain home they have built. But unexpectedly, a garbage landfill is built right outside their fence, bringing the trash and corruption of a whole country to their doorstep. As the trash rises, so do tensions between leaving or resisting, threatening their idyllic home and family unity.
The film premiered at the 2021 Venice International Film Festival on September 5, 2021. It was also screened at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2021. At TIFF, it won the NETPAC Prize. Screened at the 18th Seville European Film Festival (SEFF) on 7 November 2021, the film won the festival’s Grand Jury Prize ex aequo with Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle. In June 2022, Kino Lorber acquired U.S. distribution rights to the film, and set it for a July 15, 2022, release.
Director’s Statement
Growing up in Lebanon, I was surrounded by chaos and poetry. The country was always on the verge of an apocalypse, leading us to live fully and never sleep peacefully. This dichotomy is what Lebanon is, and who I have become. It has brought our society to a place of absurdity where people come to sterilize their homes to protect themselves.
It has also armed us with limitless imagination, humor, and a visceral experience of life. Today however, even that escape is no longer possible, the dystopia has entered our hearts. I try to look at a family’s structure in hopes of mirroring the one of our society. Once this family is fractured, it can reinvent itself with less lies and more selfless love.
