Cry Macho Movie Storyline. Based on the book, “Cry Macho” stars Clint Eastwood as a one-time rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder who, in 1978, takes a job from an ex-boss to bring the man’s young son home and away from his alcoholic mom. Crossing rural Mexico on their way back to Texas, the unlikely pair faces an unexpectedly challenging journey, during which the world-weary horseman may find his own sense of redemption through teaching the boy what it means to be a good man.
Cry Macho is an American neo-Western film directed and produced by Clint Eastwood. Written by N. Richard Nash before his death in 2000, it is based on his 1975 novel of the same name; Nick Schenk is credited as a co-writer. The plot follows a former rodeo star (Eastwood) who is hired to return a young man (Eduardo Minett) in Mexico to his father in the United States. Dwight Yoakam, Natalia Traven, Horacio Garcia Rojas, and Fernanda Urrejola also star.
Attempts to adapt the novel into a feature film began when it was first published. Since then, various actors have been involved in talks to portray the leading character, including Roy Scheider, Burt Lancaster, and Pierce Brosnan. In 2003, an adaptation was announced with Al Ruddy producing and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the leading role. After postponing filming because of Schwarzenegger’s term as the governor of California, the production was canceled in 2011 following revelations of a scandal involving him.
In October 2020, it was reported that Eastwood would create an adaptation of the novel with Ruddy producing alongside Daniel Grodnik, Jessica Meier, and Tim Moore. Production took place for two months in New Mexico during the COVID-19 pandemic. The film is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on September 17, 2021, by Warner Bros. Pictures with a simultaneous release on the HBO Max streaming service for 31 days.
