About the Story
Starting a new job can be a daunting experience for many individuals, especially when working alone. This feeling of fear can be even more pronounced for women, who may feel vulnerable during nighttime hours without anyone to offer protection or safety. In Greg Swinson and Ryan Thiessen’s horror/thriller Hunt Her, Kill Her, a new job becomes a place of terror as a janitor, Karen, in a furniture factory finds herself in a fight for her life when she becomes the target of sinister masked intruders.
Hunt Her, Kill Her is enhanced by the tension it creates, the gradual unveiling of the killer and its top-notch musical score by David Risdahl. What makes this such a great experience is how normalized Karen and everything leading up to this point is. Writer and director Greg Swinson paints a sympathetic picture of Karen as a single mother struggling with supporting her child, from the toxic masculinity she encounters during her first few hours on the job to the abusive relationship with her partner. It only adds to the realism of what women frequently face beneath the surface when attempting to perform their duties in the workplace under this type of pressure.
Greg Swinson and Ryan Thiessen’s masterful execution of their craft is truly captivating. Skillfully utilizing well-timed jump scares and strategic camera angles in such a confined space, the directors create an intense and palpable sense of unique tension and anticipation, leading to a climactic revelation of the identities of the mysterious figures lurking in the factory and the ominous fate that awaits Karen for the remainder of the film. Horror enthusiasts will undoubtedly appreciate a satisfyingly gruesome moment presented, “the bathroom standoff,” which stands out as one of the most memorable scenes in the movie. Overall, their production is a superbly crafted work of art that will leave you on the edge of your seat until the end.
Final girls come in many shapes and forms. For Karen, the protagonist in Hunt Her, Kill Her, she is genuinely engaging, displaying both resourcefulness and refreshing honesty about her vulnerabilities. She epitomizes the hardships of an average woman forced into perilous circumstances, battling for survival.
At first glance, most would not consider Karen to be a bona fide badass, but the film does a fantastic job of unveiling the potential of what lies within the ordinary and unnoticed. Hunt Her, Kill Her, defies the notion that you need kickass credentials in your arsenal as a character to stand out from the crowd, or have all the abilities and power to outwit your adversaries and, for these reasons, this gem works.
