Mulan Storyline

Mulan is a story of a hero. She defies not only the stigmatism of the role of a female character, but also proves what it means to be a true hero. Mulan introduces the concept of a strong female character who does not only do what is hard, but what is right in the eyes of her people. She becomes a power that defies good versus evil and finds a way through all that is bad to find the good in society. Mulan is a strong character that proves that all women can be warriors.

Mulan is centered during the Han dynasty during a period of time in which the Chinese were battling the Huns. In the movie the Huns invade Han China causing widespread fear, which results the emperor’s call for a mass mobilization of men to gear up and prepare to defend their country.

As the message is spread across the country, Chi-fu delivers the message to the Fa family and the other families surrounding the area. Seeing that her father will indeed die if he goes into the war, Mulan takes her father’s place and heads out to war. While preparing for war, Mulan is reunited with her past guardian Mushu and must find a way to prove her worth and defend her honor.

As training completes, Mushu sees it as his duty to get Mulan in the fight against the Huns, thus he forges a letter that forces the newly trained army to the front lines. After traveling to the spot where the other troop should be, Shang and his army find that his father’s army have all perished under the fall of the Huns including his own father. This further sets the mood of the fight against the Huns.

While traveling among the mountains, Shang’s army runs into the Huns. After fiercely battling with them and running out of supplies the army must figure out a way to defend themselves, their only solution is to take out the leader of the Hun army Shan-Yu. Mulan sees this opportunity to take out most of the Hun by shooting the last firearm into the mountain thus creating a land slide of snow burying the Hun underneath. Although her idea works, it doesn’t come without an expense, at the moment the cannon is shot Mulan is inflicted by Shan-Yu. Although she is wounded in battle she finds a way to save Shang from death which comes in handy when she is discovered as a women and is spared her life.

In the end, after being abandoned on the mountain Mulan finds out that some of the Huns have survived and are continued on their way to the Imperial city. She finds the empowerment in herself to rush to the Imperial City and warn the others about the danger that lurks in the shadows. Unfortunately for her, due to her gender many people do not take this warning seriously until the Emperor is captured and kept hostage by Shan-Yu.

As Shang’s army tried to break down the doors, Mulan invents an idea to scale the walls and distract the guards by dressing her three male companions Tao, Ling, and Chien Po up as women. The plan goes according to plan and the emperor is carried away to safety, but after Shang gets knocked out Mulan realizes that she cannot let herself leave him behind.

By distracting Shan-Yu from finishing off Shan, Shan-Yu realizes that the revenge he seeks is not against Shang but rather Mulan. This rage builds and causes Mulan to think quickly on her feet in order to survive from this savage ruler. She develops a plan to get Shan-Yu onto the roof of the palace and shot into the fireworks station of the palace where he would meet his final demise.

The plan runs smoothly which grants Mulan the crest of the emperor and Shan-Yu’s sword. After returning home, Mulan presents these presents to her father for forgiveness which later turns into a reunion with Shang and sets the scene for the two to be very happy for a very long time.
