Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (2021)

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins tells the story of Snake Eyes, who is accepted into the clan after a Japanese clan saves the life of his heirs. On his way to Japan, Snake Eyes learns the methods of being a ninja warrior by the Arashikage. Another thing Arashikage offers him is the home he’s always longed for. The life of Snake Eyes, who has built a new world for himself, is turned upside down when secrets from his past are revealed. The revelation of secrets puts Snake Eyes’ honor and loyalty to the test.

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (also known simply as Snake Eyes) is a 2021 American superhero film[6][7] directed by Robert Schwentke from a screenplay by Evan Spiliotopoulos, Joe Shrapnel, and Anna Waterhouse. Based on Hasbro’s G.I. Joe franchise, the film serves as an origin story for the title character, created by Larry Hama, in addition to being a reboot of the G.I. Joe film series. It stars Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, with Andrew Koji, Úrsula Corberó, Samara Weaving, Haruka Abe, Takehiro Hira, and Iko Uwais in supporting roles.

The project was first announced in May 2018, with Golding being cast in the titular role in August 2019 and the rest of the cast joining in subsequent months. After initial filming took place in Vancouver and Japan from October 2019 to February 2020, reshoots took place in March 2021.

Snake Eyes was theatrically released in the United States on July 23, 2021, by Paramount Pictures. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who criticized the writing, editing and direction of the action scenes, but praised the performances and production values. The film was a box-office bomb, grossing $37 million worldwide against a $88 million budget and a $160–175 million break-even point.

Film Review for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

We met with a spin-off project this time for G.I.Joe, whose series we had watched over several different periods before, and as is customary in Hollywood in recent years, we watched a production that tells the prequels of the Snake Eyes character. In the film directed by Robert Schwentke, whom we know from films serving the action-thriller genre such as Tatoo, Red and RIPD, Ursula, who gained great fame with the TV series Henry Golding, Andrew Koji, Haruka Abe, Takehiro Hira, Iko Uwais, Peter Mensah and La Casa de Papel Corbero takes the role. Again, as we’ve seen in most movies recently, the story opens with an important childhood event that the character had. Fans of the series will not be very pleased with the movie, but especially for those who like Far Eastern fighting movies, a new guilty pleasure movie could be Snake Eyes: G. I. Joe origins.

The film has all the clichés of Far Eastern films of the 80s videotape era. We have a good warrior who lost his father when he was little, and when he grows up, his only goal is to get revenge. There is also a Yakuza clan that he entered into and started working for them. There is another clan where honor and loyalty are important, where he will go through a series of tests and trainings, and our main character plays doubles with a sense of revenge, thinking only of his own purpose.

It also changes sides several times depending on the war between the clans and the course of the characters. After reading these, almost anyone can easily guess what will happen in the rest of the movie and in the finale, if only in minor details. A G.I. It feels like we’re watching a third-rate fight movie rather than a Joe movie, when the private channels were popping up and battling the videotape industry, and the character’s G.I. We almost forget what it means in the Joe universe. Of course, there will be audiences who will embrace it because they have found a guilty pleasure movie and will identify it with the Far East films they miss.

G.I. As for the fans of the Joe series, first of all, they will not be very pleased with the physical features of the Snake Eyes character, as well as the reflection in the character formation. Also, when faced with unorthodox storytelling and cliché-filled maneuvers, they might even come to hate the movie, but if their only goal/expectation is action and entertainment, maybe they can at least turn it into a watch-forget movie and disconnect from the world for two hours.

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (2021)

The film will surely please those who love both guilty pleasure and “empty” action movies. Those looking for some depth or a motto other than “fight with dignity” will probably leave the theater by watching one of the most mediocre films of 2021 for themselves. Maybe the sequel and possible Strom Shadow storyline can shed some light on saving the future of the series.

In fact, there are some moments in the movie that can be handled well and that audiences of all ages will love, albeit cliché. Snake Eyes must pass a three-step test to be accepted into the clan. These tests, of course, are as interesting as ever with their Far Eastern culture and humanitarian aspects. However, these moments are so insipid and leave a cold taste that the effect level is also quite weak and the audience is trying to hold on to the action scenes again.

The failure of these episodes is somewhat compensated for by aesthetic camera movements, exciting fight sequences, and well-crafted choreography. The director is also aware of this and consciously preferred an 80s style, which he sprinkled abundantly from these scenes. This move at least prevented even the audience who would not like the movie from getting bored, but in 2021, it is not possible to give a passing grade to a movie whose only criterion is “not boring”. It is also worth repeating its suitability for criminal taste!

This movie is based on a very unlikely series and G.I. He contributes to the Joe universe, he will. The story of Snake Eyes can already continue. Tommy, who is angry with his own clan and is likely to take a similar path to Kenta, stands at a different point. Another project is possible with the participation of Ursula Corbero and the narrative of the Cobra team. As I just mentioned, the door has been opened for the Strom Shadow narrative, and it is perhaps in the early development stage right now.

It’s a tradition, it wouldn’t be a surprise if we see an Avengers-style movie where all these names can come together after a while. Despite this movie’s invalid rating, the producers will use the opportunity to expand the universe. The most important maneuver they have to do is to set up a slightly more modern story framework. Snake Eyes managed to transport us back to the 80s and the atmosphere of fighting movies, but the fantasy movie audience was born into stories like the Avengers and the future of the genre is in their hands.
