Three Friends (2024)

Three Friends (2024)

Three Friends movie storyline. They are three friends, Joanne, Rebecca and Alice, all three teachers and have promised to tell each other everything… Or almost. Because if Alice confides to her “BFFs” (Best Friends Forever, Editor’s note) that she is no longer in love with Eric, her partner, she does not know that the latter is having an affair with one of her two girlfriends.

Two years after “Chronicle of a temporary affair” Emmanuel Mouret returns to the marivaudage that he cherishes so much. But in a jubilant exchange of roles, he confronts men with their inabilities, passive observers of a post #Metoo world which has moved forward without them. Here the girls lead the way, betray with a smile and take their destiny into their own hands.

Joan is no longer in love with Victor, but it pains her to feel she is being dishonest with him. Alice, her best friend, reassures her: She herself doesn’t feel passionate about her partner Eric and yet their relationship is smooth sailing. She has no idea he is having an affair with Rebecca, their mutual friend. When Joan finally decides to leave Victor and he disappears, the lives of the three friends and their relationships are turned upside down.

An impeccable casting

Mouret takes the time to establish his characters, supported by impeccable casting: Camille Cottin, Sara Forestier and India Hair. The latter has to live with the ghost of Victor (Vincent Macaigne, brilliant), her ex who tragically disappeared, and has since lived with crippling guilt. Mouret films it with tenderness and shocked the Mostra during an anthology scene, where Joanne sits on the edge of a bed, dialogues with her past.

No vaudeville here – even if we often smile at the well-felt lines and naughty situations. Grégoire Ludig and Damien Bonnard wonderfully embody the outdated forty-somethings, not having understood that the revolution had come at their expense. Mouret films the whole thing with Rohmerian grace (the flaw in his quality), his filmmaker tics (the music, the piano so present) but ultimately delivers a magnificent fable about female love.
